Why is it important to fund PCOS Challenge education and support programs?

Because of donors like you, we now touch the lives of tens-of-thousands of women with PCOS and their supporters each year through television and radio programming, online and offline support groups, and education and awareness initiatives.

Important Facts and Research About PCOS1

  • PCOS is a complex genetic, hormonal, metabolic and reproductive disorder that affects 10 percent of women.
  • PCOS is the most common endocrine disorder in women and one of the most common human disorders.
  • PCOS is the leading cause of infertility in women of reproductive age.
  • PCOS can lead to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, endometrial cancer and other diseases.
  • Women with PCOS constitute the largest group of women at risk for developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
  • According to the NIH, more than 50% of women with PCOS will become diabetic or prediabetic before age 40.
  • Research published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that women with PCOS are twice as likely to be hospitalized as other women.
  • Some studies have found suicide attempts to be up to seven times more common in women with PCOS than other women.
  • There is a strong genetic susceptibility to PCOS. 40 percent of sisters have some form of the syndrome. Fathers and brothers of women with PCOS also have insulin resistance and tend to have problems with weight control. Daughters of affected women have risk factors for diabetes before they even get their periods.
  • Despite affecting over seven million women and girls in the U.S. and the serious health consequences, PCOS is unknown to most people and a staggering 50% of those with the condition are going undiagnosed.

What is the impact of my donation?

Nearly two-thirds of our annual budget comes from individual donors like you. Every gift and every dollar amount makes a difference. Your gift helps provide invaluable education and support programs for women with PCOS.

  • $25 – 100 Donation – Helps operate and expand online health related programs utilized by tens-of-thousands of women and families affected by PCOS.
  • $250 Donation – Provides local support and education resources for five women with PCOS for one year.
  • $1,000 Donation – Provides PCOS educational radio programming for one year and provides transcriptions for women and their supporters who are Deaf and hard of hearing.
  • $5,000 Donation – Expands the reach of the PCOS Challenge radio public service announcements (PSAs) promoting PCOS awareness, education and support resources by five million households.
  • Other – Donations of any size are welcome and help us to expand our reach and deliver the highest quality support resources to women with PCOS.
